The official specifications for UHD Blu-ray aren’t out yet. For now, here’s a C-NET article that describes what we do know about the format and makes a few predictions. It predicts that UHD Blu-ray will not see the consumer adoption of earlier optical media, and we think that’s accurate. But there are at least two reasons why the format will be important.
First, UHD Blu-ray will help establish the standard for UHD video performance and quality. Improved color, resolution and brightness will almost certainly be part of the next generation of TVs and other AV tech, but there aren’t widely adopted standards for these qualities. UHD Blu-ray will help set those standards.
Second, there are markets where physical discs and high quality still matter a lot, such as in-flight entertainment. UHD Blu-ray will be crucially important there and in other niche markets.
