Does having our cell phones integrated with our cars make us more or less safe? It’s a good question, and one that all players in the automotive and IVI industries are struggling to answer. The release of Apple’s CarPlay has sparked a new round of conversations about car technology and safety.
It’s been shown repeatedly that distracted driving causes accidents. But as people grow more reliant on tech, it becomes harder to convince drivers to put down the phone.
So does the development of technologies like CarPlay help or hurt? Apple says that CarPlay lets drivers focus their attention on the road even as they operate their phones. But Apple also admits that safety is a concern. In fact, it’s one of the reasons that they are strictly controlling app development for CarPlay.
Ultimately, we think that new technologies will solve this problem not by making IVI less distracting but by making cars more autonomous. Of course, there’s a downside to everything: sophisticated, computerized cars are more vulnerable to hacking.
How do you think the distracted driving problem can be solved?
