Auto Operating System Release at Google I/O?
Update 6/25/2014: Google released this new tech at I/O today with the name “Android Auto.”
Google I/O is this week. We’re expecting announcements about Auto Link, an automotive operating system from the Open Automotive Alliance (of which Google is a member). While the official announcement hasn’t been made yet, sources like Business Insider, Android and Me and Automotive News are all anticipating it.
The system will likely use Android devices for control, which seems smart. Cars aren’t replaced every two or three years like cell phones; IVI that’s entirely built-in will feel obsolete well before the car is off the road. Google’s sort of system would allow IVI to feel reasonably up to date throughout the car’s life.
If someone would release a good display with an amp, radio and disc player, relying on CarPlay and Auto Link for the “smarts,” that would be a very compelling device!
